Although new in name, MESSE MORTUAIRE are in fact a continuation of the infamous Sepulchral – arguably, France’s earliest pure death metal band. While others existed that maintained more a thrashing death sound, such as Massacra, Sepulchral kept it grimy and gutted, releasing three demos during the course of 1990-1992 and then broke up in ’93. They re-formed in 2015 and successively released a single and a rehearsal before changing their moniker to MESSE MORTUAIRE.
Now named thus, Nocturnal Demonic Visitation is MESSE MORTUAIRE’s proper debut: a five-song/20-minute work of swift, sulfurous diabolism. Undeniably, MESSE MORTUAIRE are a DEATH METAL band to the very core, but equally lurking in that core is the blackest of hearts, and thus does everything here – the same grime and guttedness of the early ’90s, given further depth (abyss?) through decades spent in restless slumber – get scorched by pure EVIL: doomed and disgusting and downtuned, yes, but also perverse and simply reveling in all that is unholy and unright. Nocturnal Demonic Visitation is accurately titled, then, and stacks itself well alongside equally eldritch works by earliest Imprecation, Cemetary, and Infester.
Originally released on CD earlier this year, Nocturnal Demonic Visitation receives new, blighted life courtesy of longtime fans IRON BONEHEAD. Hail MESSE MORTUAIRE’s lawless rebirth!
